Antigua
Antigua and Barbuda are located in the eastern Caribbean islands at
the southern end of the Leeward Islands, 400km south-east of
Puerto Rico.
They achieved full independence in 1981 but remain within the
British Commonwealth. Tourism is the largest contributor to the
economy, accounting for approx. 60% of GDP and 50% of jobs. The
manufacturing sector consists mainly of light, export-oriented
assembly industries, including garments, processed food, household
appliances and some electronic assembly. Agriculture accounts for
only 5% of GDP, in addition to shrimp, lobster and king crab farms.
Antigua and Barbuda
grant tax concessions for the importation of goods used in
manufacturing. The usual corporate tax rate is 40%, but export
oriented industries with approval status qualify for a 15 year tax
holiday. There are no restrictions on the repatriation of profits of
approved enterprises, and foreign investors are frequently exempted
from the 1% foreign exchange levy on outward transfers.
Antigua
has 78 km of railway, currently non-operative. Its main seaport is
at St John's,
with a minor port at
High Point.
Vere
Bird
International
Airport,
7 km from St John's
handles international traffic and there is a landing strip at
Codrington on
Barbuda.
Antigua is in the heart of the
Caribbean
and is best known for its sandy beaches and warm sunny climate. This
island of 108 square miles has an approximate population of 63,500.
There are two ports - Heritage Quay (cruise ships) and
St. John's
Deepwater
Harbour
(cargo and cruise ships).
