GRENADA
Grenada is traditionally known as
the Island of Spice due to its production of nutmeg. It
is a volcanic island with lush forested hills,
picturesque waterfalls and extinct volcanic craters.
Agriculture remains the prime economic sector, earning
81 per cent of total revenues.
Grenada is the most southerly of
the Windward Islands, 135 km north of Trinidad. It has
had full independence since 1974 but remains within the
British Commonwealth.
Grenada remains highly dependent
on traditional agricultural products. Its main export
crops are nutmeg and mace, bananas and cocoa beans.
Growth has been experienced in the manufacturing sector
in the production of beer, cigarettes and soft drinks,
and tourism also continues to expand.
Generous tax incentives are
available, including up to a 15-year tax holiday.
Grenada has no railway. It has one
major port at St George's and eight minor ports
including Grenville in Grenada and Hillsborough in
Cariacou. There is an international airport, Port
Salines, near St George's.
